The Millennium Development Goals (now SDGs) in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture has trained 150 graduates to contribute to the sustainability of the Agric sector and reinforce Agric extension-services in Gombe State.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony of the trainees the State Governor, Alh. Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo PhD, OON (Talban Gombe), ably represented by the State Head of Civil Service DR. Daniel Musa Mohammed mni, described the programme which is the first of its kind since the creation of the state as a positive response to the challenges bedevilling agricultural production in the State due to inadequate extension agents.

Governor Dankwambo expressed optimism that the extension agents who underwent 4 weeks intensive training by the National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS) would impact modern farming practices to the local farmers in order to increase agricultural productivity and livelihood of the population involved in farming.

The Governor stated that the trainees would remain under the State Ministry of Agriculture for the period of 6 months while undergoing internship programme, after which they will be deployed to Gombe State Agricultural Development Project (GSADP).

During the course of the internship programme, the interns would be paid monthly stipends of N15,000 for Degree/HND and N10,000 for Diploma holders respectively by the State Ministry of Agriculture and the SDGs.

While congratulating the trainees the Permanent Secretary and Focal Person SDGs-Project Support Unit, Umar, Muhammad Gombe expressed his extreme happiness over the partnership between the SDGs and the State Ministry of Agriculture which according to him would resuscitate the almost dysfunctional agric extension service delivery in the state.

He commended the State Governor for showing commitment to revamp the Agric. sector through the numerous interventions introduced to the system and His contribution to the success of the programme.

In his goodwill message, the Executive Director of NAERLS (ABU, Zaria), Dr. Ismaila Yunusa Ilu praised the foresight of the state Governor for engaging the youth to assist farmers and other value chain actors to improve their productivity and income.

It would be recalled that the trainees were trained at the 3 Farm Training Centres built by the MDGs in the three senatorial zones of Gombe state namely; Ladongor (Gombe South), Wajari (Gombe Central) and Kupto (Gombe North).
